Dialogue Session with YAB Dato' Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi, Menteri Besar Johor on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ)

On 16th April 2024, President Lennon Tan and Vice-President Melvin Tan, representing the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) had the honour of attending a pivotal dialogue session with YAB Dato Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi, Mentari Besar Johor, regarding the upcoming Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Here’s a brief overview of what took place:

◾ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The dialogue emphasized the deepening collaboration between Singapore and Johor, with a focus on fostering economic growth and enhancing business synergies.
◾ 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝗦-𝗦𝗘𝗭: It was revealed that the JS-SEZ will encompass Iskandar Malaysia and Pengerang, offering a strategic advantage for businesses eyeing expansion opportunities.
◾ 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Ten key industries, including the green economy, medical and life sciences, and electrical and electronics industries, have been earmarked for development. This presents a myriad of prospects for Singaporean manufacturers to tap into emerging sectors and diversify their portfolios.
◾ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲: Both sides are committed to enhancing the ease of doing business, addressing longstanding issues like congestion, and creating a conducive environment for growth and innovation.

The JS-SEZ initiative holds immense potential for Singaporean manufacturers. By leveraging strategic location, favorable policies, and sector-specific opportunities, manufacturers can access new markets by tapping into the burgeoning markets within Iskandar Malaysia and Pengerang, and look forward to streamlining logistics and infrastructure, facilitating smoother supply chain operations and reducing costs.
