The SMF Held Its First ITE Internship Sharing Session

The manufacturing sector has been facing a manpower crunch for a few years, with fewer Singaporeans joining the sector and foreign workers unable to enter the Singapore border due to border restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Though restrictions have eased since the beginning of 2022, many foreign workers in Singapore chose to head back to their home countries, causing a vacuum of skilled workforce in the sector. Hence, the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) held its first Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Internship Sharing session on 3 June 2022 to provide members with another avenue for manpower. The SMF also hopes to raise a new generation of manufacturers from Singapore’s talent pool through the session, building a stronger Singaporean core.

ITE’s Head of Industry Placement Ms Jolene Soh shared how companies could take part in being one of ITE’s internship partners.

Closed to 60 members from across the SMF’s 10 industry groups attended the physical sharing session at the SMF Building. During the session, ITE’s Head of Industry Placement Ms Jolene Soh shared how companies could take part in being one of ITE’s internship partners, providing ITE students with an opportunity to intern at their companies. The SMF’s Global Ready Talent (GRT) also took the stage to share the available grants that members could tap on when hiring interns through GRT. The event also had Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing (AEM) Industry Group Chairman Mr Chan Hai Kiang delivering the opening address. He encouraged members to be internship partners to nurture the next generation of Singapore manufacturing leaders.
