Standards Adoption Workshop - Singapore Standards related to Lifting Machines and Gear

The General Engineering & Safety Standards Committee (GESSC) under Singapore Manufacturing Federation – Standards Development Organisation (SMF-SDO) organised a workshop relating to Lifting Machines and Gear on 22 February 2017.

The use of cranes to lift and move heavy objects is a crucial and common activity in many industries in Singapore today. It is therefore important that cranes are properly maintained, safely deployed and operated, and lifting activities are well-planned and well-managed to minimise the risks of accidents.

SS 559:2010 provides recommendations for the safe installation and use of tower cranes, including self-erecting tower cranes. It covers the selection of tower cranes, planning of installation, erection, extension, inspection, maintenance, operation, and dismantling, as well as safety measures to be taken during the execution of all the above functions.

SS 343:2014 series of Singapore Standards for specification for lifting gear (Part 1 to 3), cover specification, requirement, testing and general characteristics of wire rope slings, hooks and shackles.

SS 559 and SS 343 will complement the ACOPs and provide more information and guidelines to the workers.  The workshop will be an awareness/refresher session on standards and requirements related to safe use of lifting machines and gears for supervisors, safety officers and workers working in sectors related to cranes.
