The General Engineering & Safety Standards Committee (GESSC) under Singapore Manufacturing Federation – Standards Development Organisation (SMF-SDO) organised a workshop relating to Lifting Machines and Gear on 20 January 2017.
The use of equipment to lift and move heavy objects is a crucial and common activity in many industries in Singapore today. It is therefore important that lifting equipment are properly maintained, safely deployed and operated, and lifting activities are well-planned and well-managed to minimise the risks of accidents.
The new SS 616:2016 Code of practice for safe use of mobile elevating work platforms covers safety requirements for the protection of persons working with mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). It covers the basic safety principles, operation, maintenance and inspection of MEWPs.
CP 63 Code of practice for the lifting of persons in work platforms suspended from cranes has been revised and renumbered to SS 617:2016. It provides guidelines on the design, construction, installation and safe use of work platforms suspended from cranes.
Both SS 616 and SS 617 complement the Approved Codes of Practice/Singapore Standards related to lifting equipment and work at heights. SS 616 and SS 617 serve to provide more guidance on lifting equipment to help optimise workers’ health and safety on the job.
